Visionary artist Matthew Barney returns to cinema with this 3-part epic, a radical reinvention of Norman Mailer’s novel Ancient Evenings. In collaboration with composer Jonathan Bepler, Barney combines traditional modes of narrative cinema with filmed elements of performance, sculpture, and opera, reconstructing Mailer’s hypersexual story of Egyptian gods and the seven stages of reincarnation, alongside the rise and fall of the American car industry.

Scenes
A young woman on a dining table, with her clean shaven vulva in front of the camera, urinates, while Maggie Gyllenhaal sings. Her urinating vulva is explicitly shown as she urinates, and her urination is obviously real. An interview with a film crew man confirmed that the urination of the young woman is real, as if it isn't immediately obvious. “We have this scene where Maggie Gyllenhaal just reads her lines straight into the camera, and in the background two of them are eating each other’s asses out,” he said. “We also have this scene where one of them just pees, just urinates right on a table. I was giving her water for hours, and then she just had to hold it until we said ‘go.’” There are likely other urination and (probably faked) scatological scenes in the film as well.
