A Different World is an American television sitcom which aired for six seasons on NBC. It is a spin-off series from The Cosby Show and originally centered on Denise Huxtable and the life of students at Hillman College, a fictional mixed but historically black college in the state of Virginia. After Bonet's departure in the first season, the remainder of the series primarily focused more on Southern belle Whitley Gilbert and mathematics whiz Dwayne Wayne. The series frequently depicted members of the major historically black fraternities and sororities. While it was a spin-off from The Cosby Show, A Different World would typically address issues that were avoided by The Cosby Show writers. One episode that aired in 1990 was one of the first American network television episodes to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Season 6 Episode 17: Cabin in the Sky
While staying at an old cabin Whitley(Jasmine Guy) asks where "the little girls room" is while looking uncomfortable with her hands placed over her crotch in desperation and Mr Gaines points her out the door and Whitley remarks in a baffled tone "are you saying I must venture outside to use the facilities?" and Mr Gaines says she can also "stay inside and hold it" and the scene ends.

Season 6 Episode 19: Dancing Machines
Charmaine(Karen Malina White) is doing a dance marathon for charity and the guy she's dancing with asks what's wrong and Charmaine says she has to go to the bathroom and another guy in competition with her teases her by talking about Noah's Ark and how it rained for 40 days and 40 nights, she moans again about how she has to go but the guy she's dancing with tells her to hold, then the other guy tells her about Niagara Falls until finally Charmaine can't take it anymore and frantically runs off-screen to relieve herself.
