Marquise is a drama about the rise and fall of a beauteous actress. As cheerfully portrayed by Sophie Marceau, the eponymous heroine is an engagingly ribald, but perhaps rather too modern, character. She rises from an impoverished background to become a favourite of the Sun King, Louis XIV, and the mistress of the celebrated Racine, who wrote roles especially for her; but her fate, in the end, is a tragic one.

Toilet

In the opening scene, four women from a traveling acting troupe get a local girl to lead them to the ladies' privy. They remark that they have eaten too many plums and grapes, and are about to go in their drawers. They arrive at a toilet shack, which they regard with obvious disgust, and quickly raise their dresses to reveal their bare bums. Unbeknownst to them, several young boys are spying on them through the slats in the privy. (The young girl is in on the voyeuristic scheme, reminding the women to raise their dresses high to keep them out of the muck.) The women give great sighs of relief, and there is a hint of audio but it is clear from the dialog that this is mainly a poop scene. (Even the audio sounds like pooping.)

Toilet

The Sun King of France (played by Thierry Lhermitte) is shown sitting on his privy stool. When he finishes, his doctors take his stools to examine them for signs of disease.
