Leonard Shelby is tracking down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The difficulty of locating his wife's killer, however, is compounded by the fact that he suffers from a rare, untreatable form of short-term memory loss. Leonard tells a call girl to slam the door when she uses the toilet. She does so and wakes him up, and is seen briefly on the pot, but is there to sniff cocaine rather than to pee.
