Married small-time crooks Lou-Jean and Clovis Poplin lose their baby to the state of Texas and resolve to do whatever it takes to get him back. Lou-Jean gets Clovis out of jail, and the two steal their son from his foster home, in addition to taking a highway patrolman hostage. As a massive dragnet starts to pursue them across Texas, the couple become unlikely folk heroes and even start to bond with the captive policeman.

Lou Jean (Goldie Hawn) and Clovis (William Atherton) kidnap a state trooper (Michael Sacks) and are driving across Texas, when Lou Jean starts to fidget and become agitated. Finally she says "I gotta <i style="text-align:left;">pee</i>!" The police are instructed to pull up alongside the highway with a portable potty, which Clovis checks for traps (and finds a cop hiding inside) before he lets her use it.
The trooper is heard peeing in the bathroom of a trailer.
Several police officers are seen using urinals.
