When the elderly Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) suffers a stroke, her husband Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) must take care of her. He is shown lifting her from the toilet and wiping her after she uses it.
Anne wets the bed. The wet spots on her clothes and the bed are visible as Georges lifts her out of the puddle.
A nurse explains to Georges how to put a diaper on Anne.
