Jim Davis is an ex-Army Ranger who finds himself slipping back into his old life of petty crime after a job offer from the LAPD evaporates. His best friend is pressured by his girlfriend Sylvia to find a job, but Jim is more interested in hanging out and making cash from small heists, while trying to get a law enforcement job so he can marry his Mexican girlfriend.

Jim (Christian Bale) is trying to get a Homeland Security job, but first he has to pass a drug test. He drinks straight vinegar to shut his kidneys down, then injects someone else's drug-free urine into his bladder by putting a turkey baster to his penis. He does the latter while sitting in a car with Mike (Freddy Rodríguez). This is not explicitly shown, but his grimaces and groans are. At the job interview he is struggling in pain, and the interviewer remarks that he seems to be full of "piss and vinegar." He is in even more pain as he lines up with other men to give a urine sample, and finally pushes ahead in line.
